Who's On Your Bus?

Culture is built by people, not programmes.

One of my favourite leadership quotes comes from legendary American football coach Nick Saban:

"Get the right people on the bus, get them in the right seats and get the wrong people off the bus."

At first glance, it sounds like a quote about business. In reality, it's one of the best lessons on building high-performance environments.

Success isn't just about having talented people. It's about having the right people.

Every team, club, business or training group is like a bus travelling towards a destination. Everyone on board influences the journey. They shape the atmosphere, the conversations, the standards, the energy and ultimately the destination itself.

The wrong people don't just slow the bus down, they change where it's heading.

Culture Isn't an Accident

People often talk about culture as if it's something mysterious... It isn't.

Culture is simply the behaviours that are accepted, repeated and rewarded every single day.

It's built by the people who show up.

The athletes who encourage others.

The coaches who lead with consistency.

The teammates who celebrate someone else's success as much as their own.

The individuals who are prepared to work when nobody is watching.

That's culture.

Likewise, one negative attitude, one selfish mindset or one person unwilling to buy into the vision can have a far bigger impact than most people realise.

The journey becomes longer.

The atmosphere becomes heavier.

Standards begin to slip.

Eventually everyone feels it.

Sometimes the hardest decision a coach has to make isn't who to let onto the bus, it's recognising when someone no longer belongs on it.

From a Coach's Perspective

As coaches, it's easy to become obsessed with recruiting talent.

But talent without character is exhausting.

I'd rather coach an athlete who turns up every session hungry to learn, supports those around them and embraces accountability than someone with incredible ability but a poor attitude.

Talent can win races.

Culture builds champions.

The best environments aren't built around the fastest athletes.

They're built around people who make everyone around them better.

From an Athlete's Perspective

The lesson works both ways.

Not every bus is worth getting on.

When you're choosing a coach, a club or a training group, don't just look at the destination.

Look at who's driving. A bus might promise faster results.

It might have bigger social media numbers.

It might look exciting from the outside.

But if the driver lacks a vision, integrity or a clear direction, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

The best coaches don't just improve performances.

They improve people.

Find a coach whose philosophy aligns with your values.

Find an environment where effort matters.

Where learning is celebrated.

Where honesty is expected.

Where your teammates genuinely want to see you succeed.

Choose the bus that is heading where you want to go, with a driver you trust to get you there.

Find Your Community

One of the greatest advantages any athlete can have isn't better facilities or better equipment.

It's better people.

Surround yourself with individuals who dream big.

People who challenge you when your standards slip.

People who celebrate your progress instead of feeling threatened by it.

People who remind you why you started.

Communities create accountability.

Communities create resilience.

Communities create belief.

And belief more often than not becomes performance.

Well... those are just my thoughts anyway.

Maybe I've spent a little too much time thinking about buses.

But when I look around our training group, I can't help but smile. I see athletes encouraging one another, celebrating each other's successes, picking each other up after setbacks, and turning up day after day with the same shared ambition, to become a little better than they were yesterday.

No journey is ever perfect. There will always be detours, punctures and the occasional breakdown. But when you're travelling with the right people, even the difficult miles become worthwhile.

So, from where I'm sitting...

Our bus is looking pretty good.

And if you're someone who values hard work, humility, laughter, accountability and chasing greatness alongside good people...

There's always room for one more passenger.

The seats are full of great people, the destination is exciting and thankfully nobody's asking, "Are we there yet?"
